About the Role
The postdoctoral fellow (Neuroscientist) will be responsible for the surgical implantation of carbon-based multielectrode arrays into both small and large mammals, followed by testing in acute first-in-human trials. The devices will be placed in various brain regions, requiring a high level of surgical expertise. Post-implantation, the devices will be evaluated for their signal-to- noise quality, and various signal-processing methods will be employed to measure brain excitability and design brain stimulation algorithms in a closed-loop system.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Independently plan and conduct research, including designing and executing advanced experiments, preparing and submitting ethics applications, conducting animal experiments, analyzing high-resolution electrophysiology data, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and publish research outcomes by presenting findings at conferences, publishing in journals, and producing other scholarly outputs to meet the high academic standards set by the University of Melbourne.
  • Liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships, work with teams to achieve joint research objectives, and collaborate with partner organizations to translate research findings into actionable recommendations.

Who We Are Looking For
You will have hands-on experience in animal surgery (small and large mammals) and/or electrophysiology recordings, with strong expertise in designing animal experiments and writing ethics applications for preclinical projects.

You will also have:

  • Must hold a PhD in neuroscience, physics or biomedical engineering, and have published scientific literature as a first author.
  • Strong abilities in computer programming (MATLAB/Phyton)
  • Prior experience with advanced signal analysis of electrophysiology recordings.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
