About the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences is a diverse faculty renowned for its research excellence, teaching, training, and policy leadership across the breadth of medical, biomedical and health science fields.

Led by the Dean, Professor Jane Gunn, the faculty is Australia’s overall leader in clinical, pre-clinical and health sciences, and sits at the heart of a flourishing ecosystem of globally recognised health and biomedical organisations across Victoria.

We are based in Parkville, with a thriving rural health campus in Shepparton. The faculty comprises six schools and 41 departments, centres and institutes. It employs more than 2,750 FTE staff members and has a large and committed community of honorary members. It educates around 11,000 students each year, offers over 140 courses, and is a significant research contributor to the University of Melbourne.

About the Department of Nursing
Established in 1996, the Department of Nursing is recognised as a leader in nursing education and research across the Asia-Pacific. Offering innovative programs like the flagship Master of Nursing Science, the Department is committed to leadership, inter-professional practice, and evidence-based education.

The Department’s research tackles critical healthcare challenges, aligned with the Faculty’s Impact Domains: Prevention and Health Equity, Curing Chronic Disease, and Transforming Healthcare. It contributes to the School’s Research Hubs: Healthy Start to Life, Disability and Inclusion, and Optimising Health and Wellbeing.

Through robust clinical partnerships and initiatives such as the Centre for Mental Health Nursing, the Department fosters transformative contributions to nursing education, research, and policy.

About the Role
As Professor and Head of Department of Nursing, you will drive innovation in teaching, research, and community engagement, contributing to the faculty’s mission to improve global health and wellbeing. Reporting to the Head of the Melbourne School of Health Sciences, you will lead the Department to further its strategic priorities, ensuring it remains at the cutting edge of nursing education and research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to foster excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement.
  • Drive curriculum renewal and oversee program accreditation to meet evolving healthcare needs.
  • Build and sustain national and international research collaborations.
  • Strengthen partnerships with clinical, professional, and industry stakeholders.
  • Mentor and develop academic and professional staff to achieve their potential.
  • Promote an inclusive and collegial departmental culture aligned with University values.

About You
To excel in this role, you will possess:

  • A PhD in Nursing or a related field, along with current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • International recognition for outstanding scholarship and world-class research.
  • Demonstrated success in academic leadership, curriculum innovation, and securing competitive research funding.
  • Proven ability to build successful partnerships with industry and research leaders.
  • Commitment to inter-professional education and fostering diversity and inclusion.

This role is a five-year fixed-term appointment, with an underlying continuing position at Level E (Professor).
