Research Fellow in Experimental Levitated Optomechanics

About the Role
The Research Fellow position within the Diamond and Atomic Quantum Technologies Lab at the University of Melbourne's School of Physics entails leading experiments focused on levitating nanodiamonds in high vacuum conditions.

These experiments will contribute to a larger project aiming to transduce the torques generated by quantum spin flips into physical rotation of diamond nanocrystals. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated and innovative researcher with strong experimental prowess, capable of both independent work and collaboration within a team. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • You are expected to significantly contribute towards the research effort of the team and to develop your research expertise with an increasing degree of autonomy.
  • Under the guidance and support of Senior Academic staff conduct internationally competitive research, resulting in publications in high impact journals.
  • Contribute to and publish academic papers and other scholarly outputs to a high academic standard in accordance with the research expectations of the University of Melbourne.
  • Contribute to the co-supervision, mentoring and training of postgraduate or research higher degree students in the appointee’s area of expertise.

Who We Are Looking For
You will demonstrate a strong research aptitude and track record relevant to your experience, along with robust theoretical skills. 

You will also have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant area of experimental physics (atomic, molecular and optical physics, condensed matter or quantum physics).
  • Research experience in light-matter interactions and quantum physics in solid state, atomic molecular and optical or ion trapping systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare research reports and manuscripts for publication.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
